11 great, local activities during May 2019


Here at Pen-y-Bryn Farm we are so lucky to be surrounded by so many wonderful places to spend our time, whatever the weather. Four of the best local attractions are playing host to eleven fabulous events during May 2019 and we are sure that no matter who you are staying at our farm with, there is something for everyone to enjoy in the coming weeks. Read on to discover a taste of the local activities to enjoy this May.

The stunning Bodnant Garden has held many memorable days out over the years and this selection of their upcoming events is sure to please every guest who visits them.

  • On the 3rd of May, there will be a Bat Walk which will take place from 7.30-10.30pm. Local expert Cathy will be your guide and will teach you all about the nocturnal residents. Booking is essential for this session.

  • On the 11th of May there will be a Specialist History Tour covering the history of Bodnant Garden with gardener Fiona from 12-1.30pm. Booking is essential for this session.

  • On the 27th of May you will receive a glorious welcome on the Dawn Chorus Walk from 5.30-7.30am. Enjoy a tour of the garden at dawn with bird watching and an optional breakfast after the event. Booking is essential for this event.

The imposing structure of Conwy Castle will play host to a variety of different events throughout May, with the following three taking place at the end of the month.

  • On the 26th and 27th of May, Conwy Castle will be open for the Medieval Merriment Weekend from 10am-4pm. Be greeted by the medieval servants, say a prayer in the chapel, taste some fresh, warm bread and butter or watch the butcher prepare rabbits and make stew.

  • The 29th of May sees the Summer of Stories take over, with stories based on historical characters, legends and myths from across Wales. Each story lasts up to 30 minutes and will take place from 11am to 4pm. No booking required.

  • On the 30th of May, the castle opens after hours for Canapes at Conwy Castle. From 6.30pm, this VIP tour will take in some sword fighting from the Knights of Conwy, meet a couple of fair ladies and see some birds of prey. You will then visit a tavern in Conwy to sample some local ale.

A stunning local nature reserve, RSPB Conwy, will host four magical, nature filled events for the whole family throughout May.

  • On the 5th of May, you can wake up with the dawn chorus on International Dawn Chorus Day. Basque in the harmony of birdsong from a wide variety of birds that are encouraged to RSPB Conwy by the tireless work of the staff and volunteers. From 5.30-8.30am, with a hot drink and breakfast included in the ticket price. Booking is essentail for this event.

  • On the 17th of May, Arty Sparkly Designs visit RSPB Conwy to showcase their jewellery, handmade and knitted items made from up-cycled materials which are available to buy. Stalls are open in The Lookout from 10am-4pm.

  • Conwy Farmers' Market is a free event which will take place at RSPB Conwy and is open from 9am-1pm on the 29th of May. There will be a vast array of locally produced food items to whet your appetite.

  • On the 30th of May, the Wildlife Drop-in family fun session will run from 2-3.30pm. Have a go at a hands-on wildlife activity such as pond dipping. There is a charge for this activity but you do not need to book in advance.

Prom Xtra takes place on 11th May and is an annual family event based along Colwyn Bay’s gorgeous promenade with plenty of free activities for the whole family to enjoy. Try bubble football, kids quads, kayaking, wall climbing and segways for free. There will also be a chance to do a spot of shopping and visit the fun fair alongside plenty of other activities, not forgetting the beautiful beach where it all takes place.
